Thoughts on the 'recession'

A few weeks ago I was at a Master Mind meeting and one of the attendees brought up an interesting point that I would like to share with you as food for thought. Now, more than ever before, we live in an age of multimedia news driven markets, economics and information. As news outlets constantly report on a 24/7 basis they are caught in a conundrum of desperate need to fill each broadcast hour with as much as they can to keep your attention. All the while, they are selling air time to advertisers who are counting on the millions of eyes watching as the seconds tick by.

As the media sinks to new lows in the quality of what they are reporting on we find huge chunks of time wasted in completely useless ‘Celebrity’ segments. This morning was a typical example; a local station focused a block of time on American Idol. Contestant by contestant rating the performances, obviously trying to hype up the ratings for the next airing of the show. Also making the news today were Michael Jackson’s medical results and his planned comeback in London. Two NFL football players and a college player tragically lost at sea. The first Lady’s wardrobe choices. The list goes inexplicably on and on.

My friend made a terrific point at the meeting. Since we are in the age of celebrity, it may very well be a good time to recognize that the ‘recession’ is, in and of itself, a ‘celebrity’ in the media at this point. There is such a limited amount of actual news that all sorts of experts and talking heads are being brought in to explore every possible angle imaginable about the recession. How many people have been laid off? How is the stock market going to react? Who ripped off investors? How much is it going to cost? Why did so many banks write up million dollar mortgages to fast food employees making minimum wage? Will this afternoon’s downturn trigger a cascade of other ‘newsworthy’ stories? Etc. It just goes on and on in the same way the celeb news items do. Problem is that this intense focus never looks at solutions, just magnifies the minutia of every relevant and irrelevant angle to it.

Nothing new here really but they have to fill the time with something and no one actually watches if they put on ‘good news’ items. Good news just doesn’t seem to keep us glued to the current channel displayed on the TV. Think back, before 9/11, what was the news beating to death? Chandra Levy. Did any of that coverage help to find her body or her killer? Nope, actually its been a small but recent blurb on a few news outlets that they are pressing for indictments of someone in custody for that crime.

Why am I bringing this up? Well, I went to the mall the other day and you know what? It was full. People were out there spending money hand over fist and shopping, shopping, shopping. I walked down Lincoln Road last week at 11:30 PM and there was no shortage of people sitting at cafe’s, bars and eateries. It was almost surreal to walk in the door, turn on the TV and see how desperately bad things are after witnessing that. Perhaps it would be better for all of us to watch a little less news and focus on our lives. Stop buying into the media’s latest celebrity item.

Think about it; with gas prices at $2 a gallon are you really feeling as squeezed as you were when it was over $4?

Building your business can truly be costly. Each time you turn around you seem to spend every dollar you have on advertising and not getting ahead in your business.

It basically will nickel and dime you to death.

You really can’t get ahead in your business if you have to spend a ton on advertising, especially when you are first starting out.

Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could show you basically step by step how you can build your business without spending a ton of money while doing it?

Well, there is some good news.

I recently came across something that I think will really help your business as it has mine.

It is a videos series by a guy named Mike Dillard called “Building On A Budget”.

In these videos Mike shows you how to build any home business for $500 or less.

I took these free videos and purchased his ridiculously low priced book, and within two weeks of applying the techniques he teaches and am now getting as many as 10 new qualified prospects per day.

The best part is that I did not spend much money while doing it.

Now I have the tools to grow my business without getting nickel and dimed to death.

You can get free access to these videos by going here…

http://webdomination.buildingonabudget.com

US Kenpo Kai is hosting a Free Women's Self-Defense Workshop for learning basic self-defense strategies February 18, 2009.

Coral Gables, FL, Sandor Urban’s US Kenpo Kai will be hosting a Women’s Self-Defense Workshop on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 7:30 PM. The workshop is open to anyone, especially women in the Coral Gables and West Miami communities, interested in learning basic self-defense techniques.

“The economy is down and street crime is up. Historically speaking, we know there is a correlation between economic down turns and these types of crime. I want people to be aware of that and to take the time to learn some self-defense skills that may help them stay safe. Money is tight for everyone so we’ve decided to make this a free event in order to prevent finances from being an issue when it comes to learning these essential skills.” said Sifu Sandor Urban, Head Instructor.

This is a free class for women interested in learning self-defense skills. An unfortunate but necessary skill in these challenging economic times. The event will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 from 7:30pm - 9:00pm at Sandor Urban’s US Kenpo Kai located at 1890 SW 57th Avenue, Suite 106, Miami, FL 33155. For information please call 305-261-4787 or visit http://articles.uskenpokai.com/ to learn more. It is important that you reserve a space for this event as space is limited. You can rsvp via Facebook by clicking here
